The latest issue of Compound Semiconductor, a leading magazine in the optoelectronic industry, introduces the world's first single-crystal full-color light-emitting diode, and uses the invention as a cover story to detail the future of next- And the display may have a significant impact, or even known as "the next generation of lighting technology" (a game-changer for next-generaTIIlighTIng), the inventor of two scholars from Taiwan.

Since the invention of high-brightness blue and green light-emitting diodes (LEDs) by Japanese scientist Nakamura Nakamura (Nobel Laureate in 2014, now professor of the University of California), more than 20 years ago, LED has been widely used in daily lighting, mobile phone and TV Backlight, automotive and medical equipment. However, only monochrome LEDs are available on the market today. In full color or white applications where blue, green and red (RGB) are required, only three monochrome LEDs can be used to create a full color LED or a blue LED Plus yellow phosphor to achieve a similar effect of white light. These methods create difficulties, high prices, waste of electricity or poor efficiency and other shortcomings, especially in the future mobile phones and TV on the power and resolution of the increasingly high demand, the traditional approach has been a bottleneck.

The problem has long been plagued by the Chinese industry scientists have been resolved. Ostendo Epi Lab., A division of Ostendo Tech Inc., has developed the world's first full-color LED. They use gallium nitride materials developed three special quantum structure, can issue three different colors of light, can be independent injection can also be mixed emission. Because of the power-saving and long-life characteristics of LEDs, full-color LED displays with full-color LEDs will likely replace LCDs, or even organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs).

Dr. Chen Zhijia, the host of the project, said the use of gallium nitride materials made of blue or green LED is a mature technology, but made of red LED is very difficult, they are not only a small number of the world can achieve this goal of the team, And is the only way to focus on the three primary colors on a small device, and can freely access any color, if coupled with the appropriate deployment of the circuit, but also can mix out a myriad of colors of light, the picture quality will be more beautiful.

The two inventors are Chen Zhijia and Ye Yachuan from Taiwan, China. Mr. Chen graduated from the Department of Electronic Physics, Taiwan Jiaotong University and obtained his Ph.D. from the State University of New York. He was an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Maryland and is currently in charge of the Ostendo epitaxial laboratory. Ye Yachuan graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering of Taiwan University of China and obtained the Doctor of Electrical Engineering from Los Angeles. He worked for Tecstar and NASA-JPL, and is currently the Chief Scientist of the company.
